SURREALISM PHOTOSHOP PROJECT

For this project I was required to produce two digital surrealist montages that reflected the visual style and thematic preoccupations of a surrealist artist of my choice.  Prior to producing the montages I had discovered the work of digital artist Maggie Taylor.  I was really impressed with her unique dream-like collages and thought that by reflecting her style it would give me plenty of opportunity to experiment with layers and textures in Photoshop.

The first montage entitled ‘Brothers in arms’ was created in Photoshop using a variety of photographs and scanned textures to re-create Taylor’s dream-like collage effect.  Various photoshop techniques were learned and applied in the production of this montage including making selections, adjusting levels, using curves, colouring black and white images, layer blending modes, creating brushes and applyinh a vignette.  The image of the two soldiers, entitled ‘Artillerymen from feldartillerie  Regiment Nr.23′ was sourced with creative commons permission from drakegoodman’s flickr  account 14/03/2009

The second montage entitled ‘Granny Edwards’ was based on a photograph of my great-great grandmother, Sarah Edwards and dates to circa 1907. Again a variety of images and textures were applied to the montage using different blending modes. The chequered floor was created by applying the perspective tool to a black and white grid drawn on a layer.  The rain effect was also created from stratch using various brush preset techniques. © Sarah Delaney April 2009.
